Wallabies Ahoy!

Okay y’all, I have about fifteen minutes before I go to the bowling alley here in Rockhampton, Beef Capital Of Australia, to catch the bus that will take me to the zoo which is where I meet the people who will take me to the wallaby ranch farm thing, so this will have to be a bullet-point sort of an entry until the next time I get internet. Ready for bullets? Okay.

* In Brisbane I walked around a lot and had gelato and bought jewelery at the Valley Market went to a dance festival where I met some other bellydancers (they were cabaret though), watched some adorable urban tapdancers, and took a Bollywood class.

* I decided not to spend last night in the Beef Capital Of Australia but instead on Great Keppel Island, where I walked on the beach, saw a TON of echinoderms, gastropods, and crustaceans, and had a veggie lasagna for dinner. I cannot recommend Great Keppel Island highly enough and wish I’d been able to stay there for a week.

* I am really really over these early morning flights I’ve been taking and am considering taking an overnight train to Cairns, mostly for Agatha Christie reasons.

* I’m much warmer now.

* I’m also having to huck my heavy shoes and sweaters and jackets around instead of wearing them, which is not so much of a win.

* But warm! Very warm! Happily warm! Wearing capris and flip-flops today!

* So far I’ve lost: a pair of earrings, my sunglasses, my favorite pink heart socks, and the singlet top I’ve been sleeping in. I’ve replaced the sunnies and the singlet top, but nothing, NOTHING can replace my favorite pink heart socks.

* I am feeling a little trepidatious about this whole volunteer thing, I have to say. I have NO idea what to expect.

* Greatest backpacker foods ever: feta cheese and sundried tomatoes from the fresh deli, and sesame thins. Also, tea. Also, chocolate.

* I’m stocked up on tea and chocolate for the next week.

* It’s just about time to go to the bowling alley and the zoo and the farm, so wish me luck and I’ll update again as soon as I can. Also, I will be smuggling wallabies back with me on the plane, so, you know, put your orders in now!

    Good news about the weather being kinder, bad news about the loss of said socks (which do sound delightfully “you”)… Am sure the Wallabies will raise your spirits!

    Hey girl! Am feeling rather smug about being a part of your torrid Melbourne affair, but slightly insecure about the possibility of you being seduced by Queensland’s warm embrace – stay true!

    P.S. Put me down for one wallaby and two antechinus (antechinuses? antechinii? Whatever – they’re cute) x

    smuggling wallabies reminds me of story i was told recently. some friends of person i met had taken their 3 or 4 yr old to the zoo. one second he was there, next 2nd gone. everyone panicked, closed the entrances/exits & searched for him for an hour. suddenly someone spotted him in front of the penguin exhibit. he was quiet, wouldn’t speak to anyone. they decide to leave & drive the 2 hrs home. about halfway home they decide to stop asking q’s a/b his whereabouts & start asking him about his zoo trip to see if he’d talk. they asked if he liked the penguins….suddenly he perks up & nods enthusiastically, unzips his little backpack & produces a baby penguin!!!! somehow he’d gotten in the exhibit,swiped one & reappeared outside w/o anyone knowing. he was so quiet b/c he was up to no good!! LOL.
    so the whole stealing some baby wallabies is not out of the question–for some people anyway. : )
