I’ve had a really nice weekend. It’s been kind of rainy and cold but it hasn’t really mattered. I’m in this very good mood wherein the types of small stupidities that make up the greater part of my life…i.e. I just tried to plan out my lunches and dinners for the next week, wrote up a grocery list, went to the store…and promptly forgot to get about half the items on the list, which will neccesitate another grocery trip…don’t bother me. The way seems fairly clear.
Yesterday Carl and I had a city day. After a fantastic breakfast of oatmeal, we went to the lovely Frye Museum and had lunch and talked and talked and walked around and looked at pretty pictures. I decided I’m a big fan of egg tempera. I’ve read about it in one of my favorite books, Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood, but I don’t think I’d ever seen any real examples before. Luminous and amazing and gorgeous. I have no idea how any of it works, but it is just so strange and wonderful.
We also spent some extremely enjoyable hours in the Elliot Bay Bookstore. I am not even going to insult any of my Seattle based readers (hey! hi! wanna come over?) by telling you to go there if you haven’t already. I know you have. I know you love it as much as I do. I know you’re happy that they were bought by the excellent Third Place Books instead of an evil corporate chain or worse, torn down. I usually go to the U Bookstore because it’s close to where I work, so The Elliot Bay is a special treat. I love that they have all these used books down in the cafe for you to read, and that you can buy whatever you’re reading for two dollars. I did that last night. I also got
The Birthday of the World, which I’ve read before but had to own. You know how it is sometimes. I don’t like science fiction and fantasy very much, but LeGuin kind of transcends all of that for me. I think she’s great and I always feel like a more fully human person for some reason when I read her. I told you I actually wrote her a fan letter once, right? Yeah. Why aren’t I reading it right now? I don’t know.
So that was my day. A museum and a bookstore with my sweetheart, that’s all I did yesterday. Came home and read aloud to each other and went to bed early. Talked about going to Burning Man with Anna. Pet the cats. I’m going to clean my house as soon as I finish this…I’m even happy about cleaning the house, can you believe it? My mom’s coming in for a long weekend on Thursday night (I’m taking Friday off!), and then I’m going to see her again in May, and then then I’m going to see her again! in July when she comes out here. There’s a cherry tree in my back yard. I got my taxes done two weeks ago and am expecting a big fat refund this year. It’s been a good couple of days in the simplest and best way; nothing big or dramatic, everything sweet and easy and fun. I hope you’ve had these kind of days too, when you most need them.
