I've been offline for about five days, so just waded through quite a bit of what happened on #MooreandMe last night. And yes, had a very similar experience to yours, with the links and the stats and the stories. There are too many stories.

Anyway, I don't have much to add, but as usual, you capture the personal side of all of this so well. Take care, girl. And if you ever want to talk...

@Leaf Probably: Thanks for your suggestion. I took a self-defense course at uni but obviously need a refresher. You inspired me to look up courses in my city.
@Scott: Odds are one of your friends is the type of 'mentally damaged' person who, at some point in their life, has not taken 'no' for an answer. Sad but true.

More linkage! (Sorry, but I feel these are important to anyone who hasn't yet read them.)

Allegations broken down: http://jezebel.com/5714170/talking-about-julian-assange-has-become-terrible

Latest Assange interview: http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9309000/9309320.stm

The former has a great quotation about the clouding of judgment from those who blindly defend Assange: "whatever the hero did cannot possibly be rape because a hero would never rape anybody, because he is a hero!"

The stats scare me too. They make me angry as all hell!

I think that's why I took up Taekwon Do, and boxing, and attended a couple of self defence courses. I know that even those things are no guarantee that I'll never be targeted again, but it's a start, right??

I usually hate the whole 'link for traffic' comments, but I think this one actually fits with the subject at hand -- I wrote about my first self defence course here: http://leafprobably.wordpress.com/2008/10/20/safe-for-life-totally-freaking-awesome/

I hope it's ok that I link-dumped in your comments!! It's just that I'm super enthusiastic about self defence - I wish I could encourage more people to look into it!

Rape has to be the most cowardly thing someone can do. To take away someone's choice, someone's freedom, and to irrevocably change someone else’s life forever with little or no impact on their own lives is horrendous.
It's shocking to hear the stories of being chased down a street fearing for your life, having a partner who just won't take no for an answer, who does that?!
It's inconceivable to me that there are such mentally damaged people out there that could think that doing these things are acceptable.
When that simple word ‘no’ loses all meaning and power, the world we live in is lessened a little more each time.

Have you heard about the twittermovement "Prata om det" (Talk about it) that started in Sweden regarding this? It really took off with uncanny speed, and is still in full swing. It's explained in english here: http://prataomdet.se/in-english/

It is really strange to me, how impossible it seems to be to think that Wikileaks and Assange is part of a really important movement, but not think that that makes it impossible that Assange might be guilty of what he is accused of.

Not to mention how journalists in other countries just makes up stories about how Swedish legislation works in these cases. Frightening.
