Desert Bound

Okay. Should I even be writing this when the car is still not compleeeeetely packed? When we need to load the cooler? And find the tickets? And call our moms to tell them where we’ll be next week and also make sure that we know what campground we’re staying at tonight? When I still don’t really know how to drive a stick (isn’t that horrible?) yet have to go on a fifteen hour road trip with someone who may, once in a while, want to take a little rest? When I haven’t made a sandwich for lunch yet?

No, I know. I promise you I will do all those things. We’re going to get out of here on time and we’re going to drive drive drive until we hit northern California this evening and then we’re going to stop and then sleep and then get up and drive some more until we hit Nevada and the desert and a temporary city of 30,000 people. We have tents and chairs and rugs and masks and fairy wings and sugar scrub and stuffed animals and maps and goggles and tools and two very funny bikes. We have at lest three different types of chips and five different types of cookies. We have an entire duffel bag filled with nothing but sarongs and saris and scarves, with a couple of bellydance bras thrown in. We have CDs. We have the laptop and the camera. We have…well, we have a lot of stuff. In my head is this list that keeps running like a drippy tap: ” Whiteboard. Rug. Dishrack? Sleeping bag? Those cool shoes I covered in flat-back marbles? Cooler! Cheese. Salame. Rug. Did I say rug? Yeah, rug.”

Yesterday we went to KAVU to get a
hat
for me (it’s the Chillba. Mine’s more of a sandy color). We know the folks at KAVU and they are always very nice, doubtless because Carl represents about half their yearly revenue but also because they are just nice. The hats were thirty percent off and I was very excited about mine. it is the coolest…by which I mean it really keeps the head cool. It’s awesome. I mentioned that we were taking it to Burning Man and the guy who owns the store gave us another hat, giving us strict instructions to a) take pictures of the hat on the playa (I wonder if he means just by itself, or like, on someone’s head) and to give the second one to someone who needs it in his name. How great is that?

I was going to post a picture of me trying to get all the food together tonight, and I was going to write about going to Carl’s ten year high school reunion last night, but I see that I simply must get going and get everything else packed up, so I will simply mention in an off-hand casual sort of way that if you think you’re going to miss your Ampersand this next week while I’m away, that you might consider checking out theMusic For The Masses collaboration site. I’ve got two entries there about two songs, and I hope you like them. When I get back I’ll post them here. Also. Also! There’s a possibility I may be able to update from the playa…depending on what the internet access is like and if we can recharge the laptop batteries, you may be in for what will no doubt be a treat, entry-wise. I’ll be all “Hi! I’m naked and all E’d up! I LOVE BURNING MAN!”

Just kidding about the E (hi Mom!). The naked part, I can’t promise.
